Meep!

I’m back. I think. I hope. I had forogtten what getting a new job in a different country can entail. So much bullshit and paperwork over the last couple of months. I’m finaly out of the woods though, and more than that I have finally managed to clear my head above the grey clouds it was all creating for me. I feel like I can think again. I feel free!

My head is empty though. One the one hand it’s great that it’s just ready and waiting to be filled. On the other, I feel weird with no current WIP or even any kind of plan for what to write next. It feels strange, like that moment at the beginning of a race when you are just waiting for the off.

Blarg

Who knew that the hunt for work could suck so much out of you? So, I’ve been on the look out for a new job for a while, and, I suppose, seriously looking since mid February. I have had a few interviews, including second and third interviews, and somehow keep getting pipped to the post at the very last hurdle. Three times now it has come down to me and one other. However, as demoralising as getting so close so often may seem, I know it is just a matter of time before someone takes me on. Just so long as that happens while I still have a roof over my head, then great.

What really pisses me off are the agents I have to deal with as intermediaries. They are supposed to be helpful. I understand their role as gatekeepers and screening applicants, but when they they tell you a client wants a phone interview and then they go dead and wont return your calls, when you have two really great interviews and then go cold and wont return your calls, when they tell you they are just waiting for confirmation of a contract offer and then wont return your calls.

A bit of professionalism here guys. I get it, you are really just sales-people. Your time is money, but so is ours. And you are fucking wasting it with this bullshit attitude and way of doing your business. Have the balls to tell me I did not get the role, the client didn’t get final funding, or that they just changed their mind. Feedback matters.

I have a long list of agents and agencies I will never work with again, and it grows depressingly longer every week.

All of this means I have zero energy for writing. Pretty much zero energy for anything else right now. But I shall return. Oh yes, I will be back.

18 days gone

Two weeks down plus change. Still not feeling as though I have started the new year. I have certainly neglected the writing side of things. And the selling of the writing too. A brief look at the Amazon numbers tells me I won’t be retiring any time soon. Number one on my list of things to do is get the writing empire running again.

Too many projects want to be picked next. It’s like being in a classroom and asking kids to answer a question. Most, if not all, are there with their hands held as high as possible, some even standing up as if that’s going to get them noticed more than the rest. A few even make that strange ‘uhhn’ panting noise to show … to show they exist I suppose. No, today I am writing a long overdue story for my children. Erotica next, but today it’s for kids.

Writing aside, the failure of The Shore to make anywhere near the impact of the previous titles is clearly down to my decision to tame the cover down. Clearly a taming too far. While I had thought that people would search for erotica based on their own search terms and then the blurb provided with the book, I think the cover has a lot more impact that I had realised. I know in book-stores it’s all important, but that’s because you are browsing and ONLY see the covers (or spines). In an online store searching will bring you into first contact which normally gives you the book blurb too. In the world of erotica I’ve never known a sexy book cover to have anything to with the story inside, yet one can assume that it’s like an advertisement saying ‘this book IS sexy’.

Pricing seems to have had little to do with sales either. I know it does with other genres, but erotica… people seem to be willing to pay $0.99-2.99 for a short story (even if it is a little short). There will be one more erotica title to add to the current titles, and then who knows. I’ll decide then.

Pity that Amazon filters on such vague guidelines. But I think the cover needs to go back to sexy. So… yeah, sexy it will be. Current covers can stay as they are. And its certainly too cold to shoot anything for a new replacement cover for The Shore. I hate working with free pictures, but sometimes conditions just kick you to the kerb and you have to use what’s available.

Ok, time to get back to work. I think my New Year has finally started.

As you were

First run of 2014 done. Feeling great. Skin feels super smooth after my shower and I feel better than ever. Legs and arms feel pumped. I feel great. Keep this up 2014, and I’ll never leave you for 2015! Grrr!
